Challenges of Pharmacy-Based Immunization Services: Key Operation Issues

Program Overview:

The financial success of any pharmacy practice depends on its efficiency. In this session, we will explore strategies for maximizing the efficiency of the operation of an immunization program. We will discuss various aspects of planning and day-to-day operations, including workflow and staffing, inventory issues, documentation, communication with other health care providers, patient identification, and interfacing with immunization registries. This discussion will address operational strategies for vaccinations that are integrated within the dispensing process, as well as vaccinations that are administered in a clinic setting. Specific barriers, and strategies for addressing those barriers, will be examined.

Learning Objectives:

After attending this session, the pharmacist will be able to:

  • Discuss workflow and staffing solutions for various immunization practice models and settings.
  • Describe a plan to implement strategies that will streamline operations for provision of immunizations by a pharmacist.
  • Explain strategies for increasing the efficiency of immunization documentation and communication with other health care providers.
  • Update daily operations of pharmacy-based immunization programs to maximize efficiency.
